OBI – Opportunity Builders,Inc.
8855 Veterans Highway
Millersville, MD 21108
410-787-0700
OBI provides vocational training and employment services for adults with developmental disabilities in an environment that promotes personal fulfillment, addresses individual needs and fosters independence.
In 1962 in response to a need for occupational services for adults with developmental disabilities, a group of parents, educators and advocates came together to establish the Sheltered Workshop of Anne Arundel County (SWAAC). It began in an old firehouse on Truck House Road in Severna Park, MD. As the demand for services increased, SWAAC re-located to a warehouse facility on Langley Road in Glen Burnie. In 1990, with the development of a community employment placement program, SWAAC was renamed to Opportunity Builders, Inc. (OBI). Due to space limitations, in 1991, the program moved to a 16,000-square-foot warehouse in Hanover, MD where OBI expanded to 30,000 square feet before moving to our newly, constructed 41,000-square-foot Millersville home in 2009.
Since our inception in 1962, OBI has been a place of opportunity for adults with developmental disabilities. We have created services that enable our program participants to achieve both personal and vocational success. In addition to our daily programming, we offer supplemental services which enable these adults to be more self-sufficient, independent and live more fulfilled lives.
Music Therapy Once a week a music therapist works with OBI program participants who have specific sensory needs. These individuals have the opportunity to play a variety of instruments to promote and stimulate a more productive lifestyle.
